God, I want to read the entirety of this book from Csevet’s perspective. I can guess at his motivations at sticking so close to Maia and doing so much to help him— Maia’s instantly likeable and clearly out of his depth, he doesn’t want the empire to fall apart, or more cynically it’s the most job security and protection by power he’s ever had — but I want to know more!! Maia always sees him as put-together, prepared, a foil to Maia’s own difficulty with the court, but I want to see Csevet offscreen panicking over making up a list of wife’s for Maia. Csevet being suddenly courted by nobles’ agents to tell them about Maia or get them an audience. Csevet’s courier buddies slapping him on the back like WHAT HAST THOU GOTTEN THYSELF INTO??? and/or being incredulous that he just sort of fell into being the Emperor’s closest confidante.

I love him.

(There’s also a line early on where he ashamedly admits to Maia that he might hold a grudge against Tethimar, but he shouldn’t have let himself express it, and he and Maia “it’s not fair to count what Setheris did to me as wrong just because now I can” Drazhar have some stuff in common, huh? Although it seems unlikely that Csevet sincerely believes he shouldn’t hold a grudge.)

Edit to add: The frequency with which Maia thinks about asking Csevet things or recalls something Csevet said while in conversation with other people is so goddamn funny,
