kitchenblogging I
Aug. 11th, 2019 02:05 pmI’ve been cooking a lot this summer, and I thought I would document some of it before I go back to school and lose kitchen access in the fall. Here’s the first update!
A lot of the recipes I make come from Deb “smittenkitchen” Perelman, whose blog I love because of her focus on reproducibility (great for me, a lazy perfectionist) and the fact that she has a lot of recipes that are good for my attempts to eat heart healthier (veg focused, grain salads, etc etc) among the wide variety of things she posts.
Lately I have fallen in love with these black bean tacos. Which is weird, because her commentary on them is basically “eh, they’re ok, they’re pretty good, they’re not amazing.” But, add some garlic to those mashed beans? Some pickled red onions maybe? They are very good. I just have to get a couple cans of beans, some tortillas, and some Trader Joe’s coleslaw mix, plus the ever-present green onions that are always slowly dying in our veggie drawer, and bam!! Filling and crunchy and good. I have many ideas for riffs on these.
Pictures!

Jul. 19th, 2019 12:39 amMy dad and I watched the first season of STDisco over the past week and I found it .. mostly .. disappointing. I really wanted to like it! But argh the writing was heavy handed and I absolutely do not care about any of the Klingon stuff.
Things I DID like:
ANYWAY. I read a summary of bits of season 2 and I’m, uh, baffled and not particularly motivated, DESPITE the promise of more Georgiou, which is frankly impressive. Why couldn’t we just stick with the various iterations of the horrible little Georgiou-Michael-Lorca family for a bit longer?? Sigh.
Meanwhile: I have a job! Grading/writing feedback for online math and CS classes, which honestly I really enjoy. I get to pick my own hours and it feels like Accomplishing Something. I like explaining things! And while doing so in text is harder in many ways than doing TA lab hours and helping people with their homework in person, it does allow me to pick my words carefully. Plus, you can’t copy-paste a conversation when two people make the same mistake. ;)
The other chrysalides have yet to come out. There’s a delightful cat staying in my room during the days - I’ll try to post pics soon. Me and my friend might start a podcast soon that’s just recapping and then bitching about the television show Gotham - so if you enjoy my complaining about being let down by fiction, stay tuned.
Edit: wow, i catastrophically fucked up the formatting of the first version of this post by forgetting how HTML works. Oops. Should be fixed now.
Things I DID like:
- Michael’s character concept. Michael’s actor. But not Michael’s writing, tragically
- Both Georgious! Although I’m torn between how hot evil Georgiou is and irritation at the tired dark-Willow trope of your evil self being More Visibly Queer.
- Everything about Lorca. Sighs deeply. Unfortunately I love shitty fictional men
- Stamets! Because Bryan Fuller CAN’T stop naming characters after that poor real-life mycologist. And because he’s rude and weird. However, I can’t think too long about Culber or I get mad—
- Tilly!! When her writing wasn’t veering into sort of mean-spiritedly making fun of her she was delightful. I loved how at-ease she seemed at the party (relative to our other protagonists) and her ability to convincingly channel her evil self in an over the top way.
- The irrepressible horniness of the mirror universe. So much weird caressing and torture and leather and blood.
- Lorca’s inexplicable Scottish accent bit.
- That time there was a montage of him being murdered in a time loop.
- The way he talks to Philippa.
- Once he slammed his face into a wall without prompting to make himself look beat up.
- I am not very good at being a lesbian.
look it’s too complicated to explain how my various feelings about various fictional men fit into my sexuality here but rest assured: i’m already taking care of overthinking it on my own!

catskill trip failures: was sort of hoping my chrysalides would come out while we were up here bc it seems like a nicer place to live, but they remain stubbornly opaque. adventure sync got turned off for a while so half my hiking didn’t count towards egg-hatching. did not make the pear-chocolate cake i really wanted to try because we lacked 1) baking powder and 2) good pears
catskill trip successes: read two more books of the raksura (please tell me there’s fanart for these!), plus the luminous dead which i recommend if you like the idea of Fraught Gay Sci-fi Caving Horror, plus borrowed and selectively bookmarked two cookbooks. walked a lot. saw many cool rivers, trees, butterflies etc. did a jigsaw puzzle with my family and also talked to them wayy more than when we’re at home and busy. cupcake went on her first off leash hike! also, we met a delightful cat at the catskill mountain country store. all their cats are named stuff like Ivan Terrible and Pebble Latte. this one, for some reason, is named Mexican Hat.

miss hat let me pick her up and purred. when she saw the dog she hissed, but then she came on the porch anyway and flopped down under my dad’s chair.
like all the employees came out to fawn over cupcake, which was wonderful.
also i found a couple geocaches, but then while going off by myself to look at the first twenty feet of a trail for the last one, i tripped over my skirt and stumbled directly into a deep muddy stream. RIP.
ETA: realized i maybe should clarify the chrysalides remark, since this is not in fact tumblr! basically my mom brought me three swallowtail caterpillars off a customer’s parsley plant and i’ve been raising them. their names are martin, jasper and beatrice, and at one point i could mostly tell them apart, but after eating a shit ton of parsley, pooping constantly, going into Escape Mode and then setting down to make their chrysalises, they now look identical. i brought them upstate with us in case they eclosed in this four-day period, but no such luck. all i can ask for is that it’s not WHILE we’re driving home!

Feb. 4th, 2019 12:17 pm a completely fictional house and family has become a recurring element in my dreams. like they’re not FROM anything, i have not until now thought about them while i was awake, but whenever i dream about walking in my neighborhood it’s like “oh, i’ll take the shortcut through the backyard of that rich family with the pool.” sometimes we’re pals and sometimes they yell at me for trespassing but it’s always the same concept …… brains. weird

Feb. 2nd, 2019 04:25 pm Ah, I love the television show Gotham.
This week: I was excited because Ed's brain is broken again and he went to confront Oswald about it! Only it turned out that it WASN'T Oz, it was .. Hugo Strange, who Oz hired to fix Ed ... working for THE GOVERNMENT, who MIND CONTROLLED ED into murdering hundreds of refugees... and this branch of The Government is embodied by AN OLD FRIEND OF JIM'S WE'VE NEVER MET BEFORE, who said some generic-ass army buddy dialogue and then turned out to be evil, and tried to make Jim kill Ed? So that Jim could join their great secret government project? Of.... I don't know? killing everyone in Gotham? It's Not Clear.
This fucking show, y'all.
Also we're at a level of fake science now where you can just put a chip in someone's brain that lets you shine a light in their eyes and then they have to follow your orders, apparently, and Hugo Strange straight up sawed off the top of someone's head, skull and all, and then STAPLED IT BACK ON AND THEN THE GUY GOT UP AND WAS DOING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FIVE MINUTES LATER AAAAH!!! (.... okay, this one genuinely was worse than average.) And yet I can't tear myself away from Robin Lord Taylor acting his heart out despite being handed this God Damn Nonsense, &c.
/o_o\ (that's me putting my hands to my head in despair)

Jan. 30th, 2019 08:23 pm I have not posted a lot lately because I went back to college and it's wild! Like, good, but also I vastly underestimated how long it would take me to write up these geometry proofs and I've been doing a math marathon literally all day and have covered >15 sheets of looseleaf. But... it's kind of fun! Even though it's due tomorrow!
So I'm taking a moment to eat chex mix and check in with y'all before I return to staring at these trees of max degree 3 trying to do induction at them.
(I feel a little bad because two people from my class are literally downstairs from me trying to tackle these problems, and I think I'm significantly further along than them, and traditionally what I would do in this situation is go help, but I am restraining my tendency to do unpaid TA work because I got behind on my own work and I'm already very tired.)

Jan. 16th, 2019 09:14 pmi made this for the second day in a row, cuz i had scallions left over, and it’s … tastey. thanks deb. i’m a sucker for “”bowls”” and also for crispy fried eggs ala smitten kitchen (although the new frying pan stymied me and the yolk was harder than i’d like.)
( food picture )
i’m pleased because this is the first time i’ve felt like i’ve had the energy to cook in like, months. and i might as well get some cooking done while i can! no easily accessible kitchens at college. ): it was so much easier to cook* at boarding school, which seems wild because i was FOURTEEN
*which here means, watch my more motivated friend cook and occasionally listlessly chop a vegetable, but there WERE cooking amenities, is my point

Jan. 12th, 2019 07:49 pmHere is a life update on a selection of Things I Have Done despite spending most of my time packing, studying, or worrying about packing and studying!
1. I wrote some A Series Of Unfortunate Events fic! Like I said, I finished the third season of the Netflix show last week and I was .... conflicted. Now that I've recovered from Lemony Snicket making me cry, I have dealt with some of these feelings through writing:
place daturas on my grave, 414 words, gen, mostly about Kit Snicket being sad during Penultimate Peril/The End. (Let her cry, Netflix! For fuck's sake! Stop stealing all the interestingly fucked-up female characters and replacing them with ~~sexy sporty spies~~!)
This gets a special mention for being the first fic I've posted on AO3 where people have told me it made them cry. :')
2. Working on digital painting! I've been realizing more and more lately that all of my sketching and practicing and idle art activities have been focused on line and shape, and that I really really need practice with color and value and stuff. (Okay, it was just the one painting so far, but I'm happy with it.)
( big-ish image )
Ref'ed from this picture. It's not perfect, but it's something! :)
3. New knitting project! There isn't much of it yet, but it's coming along gorgeously. The colors of the Malabrigo Arroyo are just (chef's kiss), as is the pattern. The pink is a provisional cast-on, lol.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the slipped stitch border seems to.. like.. pull? Like it naturally wants to be a shorter length than the rest of the piece. Hopefully it'll be fine??

Jan. 9th, 2019 05:44 pm Today's mood is: exasperated about administrative incompetence in re returning to college. You would think the person whose job is to advise me could at least read my email instead of answering different questions than I asked, but, no. Anyway, instead of complaining too much about that, here's a
CAT RUNDOWN
(with pictures all taken today, so they're not the most flattering portraits.)
THE SUNROOM GANG / THE OLDS

1. Abba. Clingy baby; nicest cat in the house, will come sit on your lap instantly after you arrive. May also turn her head so your fingers go into her eye socket, which is unsettling. (She had surgery about a year ago, for cancer in her eye, but she's recovering marvelously.) Source of alarm when she drags herself onto an unexpecting lap with claws fully extended. She and Emma are Abyssinians, and sisters, or so we were told; they're both hot messes because of their Bad Purebred Genes.

2. Emma. Tiny, skinny, unexpectedly pointy, blind as a bat, will walk directly in front of your feet as if on purpose. She started the Sunroom Gang by being confined to one room because she kept getting lost in the house at large and Yelling. She mostly hangs out in her basket, but will happily sit next to you and get scritches, and goes NUTS for baked goods. I don't know why. Anything with butter.

3. Romeo. A horrible gross old man who I love. Thinks he's a baby and WILL try to suckle your clothes. He's so handsome and so, so dumb. He also has a huge terrifying hiss which he deploys at anything that startles him, inc. his own tail, a toy, a person sitting down two feet away from him on the couch and very slightly jostling him. He's also on cat anti-anxiety meds* to stop him from getting stressed out and spraying in the house, which unfortunately makes him even dopier. He and the dog chill on the couch together because they both love my dad, and they're both so chill that my dad has a whole collection of adorable pictures of them lying on each other/etc.
THE BEDROOM GANG / THE SHY CATS / THE FOSTER FAILS
These three were all adopted in similar circumstances: my mom had just started doing cat rescue but didn't have the contacts yet to find homes for cats that were still skittish and weird. They will all run away if someone walks towards them, but if I lie down on my parents' bed they'll all run over and start rubbing their faces on me immediately.

1. Yuki. Literally showed up on our literal doorstep one day, just a tiny albino kitten (she's got the blue-red eyes and everything) that, okay, to be fair, I think my dad and I were the driving force in adopting. Named by me in my weeb phase; her full name is Yukihime. Known for: habitually grimy face, small head big body, looks like opossum, hides under blanket. She's also a shoe fetishist.

2. Snickers. Puffy baby. Likes the catio the most of all our cats and can often be found voluntarily chillin outside, even in the winter. Known for: round. She and Gremlin are frenemies and wrestle constantly in the hallway while waiting for dinner.

3. Gremlin. She's really pretty and this picture doesn't do her justice! She was adopted while I was at boarding school, and my dad painstakingly socialized her into loving him, and then I came home and stole all her affection and now she Only Loves Me. If I sit down in the bedroom she will squeak excitedly and then leap in between me and whatever other cat I might be paying attention to. Very sweet and soft except that she LOVES to bite my fingers right when I think we are getting along great.
MISCELLANEOUS OTHERS

1. Nicky. Distinguished by her square, boxer-y face, constant murderous look, actual extreme sweetness (except to other cats), and the fact that she was almost dead when we got her and now she's mostly healthy and just keeps getting denser and denser. Not bigger, just. Heavier. Earned the epithet "greasy grandma" from my friend because, uh, well. It's accurate. I have to brush her a lot. When she was first here and living in a crate she would "vacation" in my usually cat-free room, so now she takes any opportunity she can get to come sit on my bed and purr very loudly.

2. Poncho. Ankle-biter. Devil cat. Horrible gremlin. I am trying SO hard to be her friend but her behavior is VERY hard to decode. Lives in the basement because she is not fit for society; frequently escapes and runs around causing chaos until she sees the dog and runs back downstairs.

3. Hamilton. Round smug ball of outdoor cat. We trapped him and got him fixed, but haven't gotten him inside. He frequents our house and at least two others on the block for food, but likes sleeping in the cave my mom made him out of this deck chair. Does NOT like when I unexpectedly lift up the blanket to look at him (he only lets her touch him, and only sometimes). Unexpectedly good pals with the dog, and often runs up to her to rub on her when she goes outside. Oh, he also used to be Snickers' "boyfriend" (according to my family) because they would headbutt the glass door and roll over at each other.
there are also some fosters but i'm not including them in this post because they're temporary. ok gotta go eat dinner good night
* his cat anti-anxiety meds are actually just human prozac; my mom jokingly suggested i should change my prescription so we could get my meds from the vet too.

belated end-of-year knitting meme
Jan. 6th, 2019 09:53 pm1. Your favorite knitting project this year
Sentimentally, I have a lot of feelings about the Parlor Cats. They were modeled closely off of some of the adult cats in the rescue my mom works with, in hopes that I could use them to stir up interest. The adult cats are harder to find homes for than the kittens, and these three were all black or black and white, which makes them often overlooked as well. One cat in particular who I really loved, Momma, was a big fat shy tuxedo who sat in her bed all day (and would walk right back to it if you moved her), but who was incredibly sweet when you gave her affection. Here she is with her mini-me:
Brioche!!!
In terms of craft: the Pembroke Street Cowl I made, which is lovely and soft and has beautiful Noro colors.

A little while after that, Momma was adopted! Not because of my knitted cat, lol, but a woman came in to look at another cat and said she felt like Momma needed her more. The guy who dropped Momma off brought her my little knitted cat, and the adopter left me a really sweet voicemail about it. <3
2. Your least favorite knitting project this year
I’m dissatisfied with the last hat I made my mom — we’ve tried it a few times, but she’s picky about clothes. Which is fine, I also am, but hmph. Hmph I say! She picked out the yarn for this one, and I don’t love the colors, so I can’t even adopt it into my wardrobe. :P
3. The number of knitting projects you completed this year
Ravelry says nine. Ten if you count my dad’s cowl, which I haven’t posted yet. I think there are a few more I forgot to post, but not a LOT more; I was in a bit of a knitting slump for the first half of the year.
4. The number of knitting projects you started but have not yet completed this year
I think two: some more fingerless gloves I sort of forgot about, and the Reyna shawl I’ve been putting off weaving in the ends on and blocking for literally months.
5. Your biggest knitting project of the year
Probably said shawl:

Ugh it looks so janky unblocked and it still is. >.>

6. Your smallest knitting project of the year
Parlor cats! Parlor cats!

7. The project you most enjoyed the process of knitting this year
This Midnight Sea hat:

The colorwork was simple enough that it wasn't too hard for my unpracticed colorwork skills, but complicated enough to be fun. Plus, brioche brim!

8. Knitting events (exchanges/knit-a-longs/classes/etc) you participated in this year
Alas, none, I've been at home and not doing much. I did go to library knitting group most weeks!

9. Your favorite music/podcast/tv show for listening to/watching while knitting this year
I listened to a loooooot of Adventure Zone and Sawbones while knitting.

The black Malabrigo wool/silk blend I used for the Pembroke Street cowl, which I .. hm. Did not write what that was on the project. I'm sure I've got it written down somewhere. I believe it's the recommended yarn for the project on Ravelry?
-- Actually I also want to mention the aran weight City Tweed yarn from Knitpicks I used for my dad's cowl. Soft ... alpaca-y...

13. A new-to-you technique you tried and hated this year
I theoretically learned how to pick up stitches Properly, and yet I am still very bad at it.

14. Your favorite yarn store/source of yarn this year
Still KnitPicks, lol. I got some stuff from LoveKnitting too. I don't drive, so I haven't done much in-person yarn shopping.

15. The first knitting project you plan to start in the new year
Well, we're six days into the new year, BUT, I haven't started anything, so I can still answer this question. I think I'm going to use that red-orange Malabrigo to make a long ribbed scarf. >:3

I was trying to get a picture of Romeo holding his mouth open (he has a bit of a cold, and whenever he breathes through his mouth he looks SO shocked) and instead I caught him mid-very slow open mouthed sneeze pointed directly at me.

Meanwhile, Nicky had some catnip and ascended to a higher plane, or at least her head did.
TODAY: I spent my Sunday in a weird way, i.e. went into the city and saw a concert performance of Monteverdi’s 1610 vespers (or, this is what i was told it was.) It was my friends’ choice, and the singers’ voices were beautiful. I did almost fall asleep because it was hypnotically slow and repetitive and I do not speak Latin. But it was still a lovely day.

Jan. 5th, 2019 12:49 pm Mm. I have such mixed feelings about the end of Netflix's ASOUE adaptation but I don't have the energy to write a well-thought-out post.
Instead I will say: last night after getting mad about the happy endings in the adaptation (lmao) I proceeded directly to getting incredibly sad about the lack thereof in the books, because I am a fool, and then was just lying on the floor like, oof. There isn't THAT much fiction that makes me Genuinely Really Sad — usually if I'm trading sad headcanons with someone my mood is >:3 — but ASOUE is one example (plus: The Body, Baru Cormorant, the end of Dollhouse for a while, a fucking AU Eragon fic about Galbatorix when I was a childe, Code Name Verity, &c).
It's so weird because I can be, like, laughing about how comically awful everything is for the characters and that's Fine, and then another time I'll think too hard about Beatrice and be GENUINELY physically uncomfortable from how sad I am. Sad fiction is such a dangerous pastime??? Why do people do this??? I know I have enjoyed it before and, lo, I already feel better this morning, but last night I was just like ..... oof! I've fallen into a pit trap of my own construction! (and daniel handler's)
Seems unfair that people can write words that trick my brain into feeling sad about fake people but I can't say "... and then they were all fine!" and reverse it :P
(But I don't want BARRY SONNENFELD to reverse it either. That's just bad adapting, Barry.)

Yuletide recs!
Dec. 28th, 2018 01:02 pm This year was the most motivated I've ever been to actually look at Yuletide fics, and lo, they were good. :D There was a point where I just had twenty fandom tabs open on my phone and was slightly overwhelmed (it's amazing how things being interesting and fun doesn't stop them from overwhelming me with a feeling of obligation LOL) but I successfully motivated myself by thinking of writing this post. So. Here it is, by fandom.

... you’re reading some weird as hell but unexpectedly good fic and you’re scanning the kudos trying to decide if you’re brave enough to leave kudos logged-in when you suddenly see someone you know

except instead of “same hat” it’s like “same weird porn” or “same RPF set in stardew valley”
Sarah luckydicekirby has also described this feeling as meeting a fellow traveler in the weird but cozy cave system of AO3 ... which is evocative and a nice image to go to sleep thinking of.

Dec. 25th, 2018 12:24 amGod, I want to read the entirety of this book from Csevet’s perspective. I can guess at his motivations at sticking so close to Maia and doing so much to help him— Maia’s instantly likeable and clearly out of his depth, he doesn’t want the empire to fall apart, or more cynically it’s the most job security and protection by power he’s ever had — but I want to know more!! Maia always sees him as put-together, prepared, a foil to Maia’s own difficulty with the court, but I want to see Csevet offscreen panicking over making up a list of wife’s for Maia. Csevet being suddenly courted by nobles’ agents to tell them about Maia or get them an audience. Csevet’s courier buddies slapping him on the back like WHAT HAST THOU GOTTEN THYSELF INTO??? and/or being incredulous that he just sort of fell into being the Emperor’s closest confidante.
I love him.
(There’s also a line early on where he ashamedly admits to Maia that he might hold a grudge against Tethimar, but he shouldn’t have let himself express it, and he and Maia “it’s not fair to count what Setheris did to me as wrong just because now I can” Drazhar have some stuff in common, huh? Although it seems unlikely that Csevet sincerely believes he shouldn’t hold a grudge.)
Edit to add: The frequency with which Maia thinks about asking Csevet things or recalls something Csevet said while in conversation with other people is so goddamn funny,

BOGLINS, CONTINUED
Dec. 23rd, 2018 11:16 pmHere is an excerpt from the Goblin Emperor, which might have incorrect punctuation or formatting because I only have the audiobook on hand right now and had to transcribe it, but which I love very much:
( csevet making a point )
(wipes away a tear) maia/csevet good
